I spent the last class on Friday finishing the above monochromatic painting which I'd begun the week before.

'Head Drawing' - Week 14

Last Friday I began my final in-class piece for head drawing.  I began with a monochromatic underpainting which I am planning to glaze over next week to create the flesh tones.  This is a process known as 'verdaccio,' which was often employed by the pre-ninteenth century 'Old Master' painters.

Nude Figure Workshop #5

In workshop on Friday I decided to continue the exercise from the days class and completed the monochromatic head study below.

'Head Drawing' - Week 13

Starting today and until the end of the semester, 'Head Drawing' will be 'Head Painting.'  The following piece was done in ~3 - 4 hrs earlier today.

'Head Drawing' - Week 12

The drawing below was completed earlier today in about 2-3 hrs.  It was a pretty easy pose for the model as she got to sleep all day! :)

The task for class tomorrow was to continue the exercise from last week and layer multiple heads on a drawing.  The composition below was completed at a 'Clothed Figure Drawing' workshop earlier this afternoon.

Yesterday in-class we continued our experimentations with style, this time layering multiple drawings on one page.  We completed four different variations, but the piece below is my favorite.

Last Friday in 'Head Drawing' we did some variations on style while listening to four different style versions of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."  The four musical styles were jazz, pop, rock and techno.  Can you tell which is which?

The second part of this assignment was to draw for head from a movie.  For the movie I chose David Lynch's 1984 "Dune" and the drawing below is my favorite of the four.

'Head Drawing' - Assignment #3 (Part 1)

The third assignment for 'Head Drawing' has 2 parts, the first of which was to draw 15 small heads from magazine photos emphasizing the light side vs. the shadow side of the face.  Of the 15, the following 2 are among my favorites.

Yesterday in class we began working in a more impressionistic style.  The drawing above was completed in about 3 hours from a live model.

'Head Drawing' - Assignment #2

Last week in 'Head Drawing' we each posed for a few minutes while everyone took reference photos to be used for our next assignment.  It was up to us to draw whomever we wished and I have posted my reference photo and in-progress drawing below.  The piece will be completed for class next Friday.

I completed the portrait above for the first assignment in 'Head Drawing.  This subject is my classmate Lisa who kindly donated the reference photo.
