'Head Drawing' - Assignment #3 (Part 1)

The third assignment for 'Head Drawing' has 2 parts, the first of which was to draw 15 small heads from magazine photos emphasizing the light side vs. the shadow side of the face.  Of the 15, the following 2 are among my favorites.

'Situation & Environment' - Week 9

Today we began a new painting to be completed over multiple class sessions.  Mine is shown below and while it may be so exciting right now, I still have 2 more weeks to work on it so make sure to check back next Wednesday to see the progress!

'Situation & Environment' - Assignment #2 (In Progress)

For this assignment, I am using a direct painting method with color added from the beginning instead of the monochromatic painting w/ color glazes employed last time.  The piece below will be finished for class next Wednesday so make sure to check back to see how it turns out!

'Situation & Environment' - Assignment #2 (The Beginning)

Since the first assignment was to paint a figure under artificial light indoor, the second is to paint a figure outdoors in sunlight.  My photo reference is shown below along with a quick value sketch.  I did a value sketch for each reference choice to help evaluate.

'Narrative Illustration' - Assignment #4

The next assignment for 'Narrative Illustration' has been in collaboration with a class in the Advertising Department.  We are illustrating an advertisement for a local Judo studio which incorporates storybook characters.

For my preliminary sketch, I decided to give 'The Ugly Duckling' a chance to get back at the other ducklings for teasing him.

Figure Painting Workshop

The following painting was completed in 2-3 hrs yesterday afternoon at an AAU workshop.  These are some of the quickest paintings I attempt to complete and it is always a fun challenge!

Zentangle Artist Trading Card

Artist trading cards have been around since the late 90's and are small works of art (about the size of a baseball card) that are sold or traded between artists.  They are also the perfect size for Zentangles!  Can you tell what I was thinking of when working on the following card?

This card is available for trade so if anyone out there is interested, please comment! :)

'Situation & Environment' - Week 8

This week in class we finished painting from the pose we have been working on for the past 2 weeks.  I did not get as far as I would have liked since I spent the first week on a value/color and composition study.

Next week will be the start of another 3 week painting and I will definitely get started on the final canvas sooner!

Zentangle #2

I've been having a lot of fun with Zentangles and this second example was somewhat biologically inspired.  What do you see?

'Narrative Illustration' - Assignment 3 Final

Of the 3 sketches that I did to tell something about Albert Einstein (see post 3/4), the third was chosen as the class favorite.  I have been working on completing a final version using non-waterproof ink and india ink markers on watercolor paper, which can be seen below.

'Situation & Environment' - Week 7

Today in class we continued painting from the same pose as last week.  Since last week was spent working on a small study to work out color and composition, I started a larger painting today from a different position in the room.  It will be completed next Wednesday so make sure to check back to see the finished piece!

Zentangle - #1

I recently found out about the phenomena and practice of Zentangle® through a calligraphy and book arts catalog.  To find out more, I have been reading 'Yoga for Your Brain' by Sandy Steen Bartholomew and the composition below is my first attempt.

Le Pen and pencil on Moleskine paper

For awhile I have been looking for something creative that I can always be working on an iteration of and I think this may be it.  I have to admit I may be somewhat addicted so look for more Zentangle inspired art in the future!

The above drawings were done as the final project for 'Drawing Plants in Perspective' at Filoli.  I also decided to take the opportunity to practice my italic hand!

Nude Figure Workshop - #3

The following piece was done in about 2 hours this past Friday afternoon.  It's one of the quickest oil paintings in color I've done so far, but I spend so much time working on other things that it can be fun to work fast!

'Head Drawing' - Assignment #2

Last week in 'Head Drawing' we each posed for a few minutes while everyone took reference photos to be used for our next assignment.  It was up to us to draw whomever we wished and I have posted my reference photo and in-progress drawing below.  The piece will be completed for class next Friday.

'Situation & Environment' - Week 6

This week we began painting from a pose that will be continued over the next 2 weeks.  The painting below is a small (12 x 16") study I did to work-out the composition and color choices.  Next week I will begin a larger canvas (16 x 20") with 2 class sessions to complete!

'Situation & Environment' - Assignment #1

I have been busily adding color to my painting of Quinn from last week and the result can be seen below. There will be changes to make after the in-class critique tomorrow, but I am pleased with how it looks so far!

'Narrative Illustration' - Assignment 3

The next assignment for 'Narrative Illustration' is to create 3 sketches that tell something about Einstein and fir within the dimensions of 3" x 8".  The 3 sketches below will be shown in class tomorrow and them one will be completed; most likely in watercolor.  The information they are meant to convey is listed below each piece.

Einstein's brain was driven from New Jersey in a Tupperware bowl in the back of a Buick.

A favorite Einstein quote of mine - self explanatory.

He was a ladies man.

Comment and tell me which is your favorite!
